
Our Board
All of New Zealand’s state schools have a Board to govern the school. Half of the Long Bay School Board is elected every 18 months by parents. The staff representative is elected every 3 years.
What does the Board do?
The Board governs the school in accordance with the Long Bay School Charter and the directives of the Ministry of Education. The essence of the Board is that all members work together to ensure the successful education of all children enrolled at the school. The Board is responsible for setting strategic goals through its Strategic Plan, determining Board policy, delegating powers including school management, review, employment of staff, the school’s financial affairs and property management.
Who is on the Board?
The Board comprises of seven members: five parent representatives elected by the parent community, one staff member elected by the school staff and the school principal.

Board Meetings
The Board meets twice a term on a Monday at 6.30 p.m. in the school staff room. These meetings are advertised in the school newsletter and this website. All members of the school community are warmly invited. Members of the school community who wish to speak at a Board meeting on a particular issue, should contact the Presiding Member so that provision can be made. How can I get involved?
Standing for the Board is a great way to get involved in your child’s education. Elected Board members will be offered training and support to make carrying out this responsibility easier.
Elections are run every 18 months with half of the parent members elected each time. Board members hold office for 3 years. In order to stand for the Board you must confirm that to the best of your knowledge you are eligible to be a Board member. The website of the New Zealand School Boards Association (NZSBA) has information for current or potential Board members.
If you are interested in standing for election, a good idea is to talk to a current Board member. You may also like attend a couple of Board meetings to get a better idea of the role and the responsibility involved.
